Urban reserves in Buenos Aires

The city of Buenos Aires and the surrounding areas have a large number of urban reserves ideal for bird watching, safe environments with great biodiversity are usually chosen by our passengers since they allow quick access (the furthest reserve is located just 30 minutes away by car) and a large number of species to discover (only in the City of Buenos Aires we have registered more than 250 species) departing from the area with the highest concentration of hotels in the city, also and since most of the reserves are on the coast of the Rio de la Plata it allows us quick access from the city's cruise port or from the metropolitan airport AEP.

Let's go with the reservation information:

  • Costanera Sur Ecological Reserve: The largest green lung of the city and one of the best places to visit, in this reserve we even offer the possibility of doing a full day, if you are interested in this site I recommend visiting the following link >> https://sandpipertours.com/producto/reserva-ecologica-costanera-sur/ This reserve is ideal for bird watching and it is even possible to see some mammals, snakes and reptiles.
  • Vicente Lopez Ecological Reserve: Located in the Vicente López district and about 20 minutes from the Federal Capital, this reserve is one of the smallest in the surrounding area and has a lagoon and walkways that are very interesting to explore.
  • Rivera Norte Reserve: A 50-hectare reserve, including part of the Río de la Plata River up to the Costanero Canal, with vegetation typical of the Río de la Plata coast and a very well-preserved gallery forest.
  • Lake Lugano Reserve: This is the only reserve south of the city, but it boasts one of the best-preserved lagoons with a wide variety of ducks and herons. It also has several trails through the grassland. It's recommended to visit before or after a flight to Ezeiza, as it's halfway to the International Airport.
  • Yrygoyen Reserve: Although it is not officially a reserve and lacks a park ranger corps, this property is ideal for bird watching since it combines several interesting environments such as grasslands, ceibales and the coast of the Rio de la Plata. It is located 25 minutes by car from Buenos Aires.
  • Costanera Norte Ecological Reserve – RECUN: Very close to the domestic airport of the City of Buenos Aires and in front of the River Plate stadium is this beautiful reserve, super safe given that it is located within the university grounds. A canal separates the reserve from the university with good lake vegetation that is the habitat of several species, the star being the Roufous-Sided Crake.

On this tour, we invite you to choose two of these reserves to combine the experience however you prefer. Our plan is to go birdwatching with a specialized guide in the morning in one of the reserves, followed by lunch and a visit to another reserve of your choice.

Excellent birdwatching trip with Sandpiper. I had several options to choose from and decided on Costanera Norte and Vicente López. A full day with many new species. Many thanks to Diego, a great guide, very knowledgeable about the local species. I recommend Sandpiper 100%.

Really fun, if rushed, day today! If I hadn’t thought of this last minute, I would have arranged my trip for 2 or 3 full days in Buenos Aires, but at a minimum, the trip convinced me to come back soon!

    3. Erick Burres

Our birding adventure with Sandpiper Birding went smoothly from start to finish. Communication while booking and pre-excursion was great. Our guide Manuel was fantastic and we enjoyed our time birding with him. The birds were super cooperative and our list for the day was excellent! I would choose Sandpiper Birding again.
