Natural heritage of humanity since 1984 and one of the 7 natural wonders of the world since 2011, the Iguazú National Park is a unique natural universe. Full of life, abundant vegetation and 275 waterfalls, including the Devil's Throat, falling 82 meters high, it is the ideal place to connect with nature.
Through wide and comfortable walkways you can enjoy the Falls and the Misionera Jungle.
On this adventure we will spend half a day touring the Macuco Trail (the best for bird watching) and after lunch we will visit the famous Iguazú Falls. We have access to the park outside of opening hours to the general public so we can enjoy of an exclusive connection with the local birds.

Sandpiper Tours organised an outstanding trip in to the Iguazu National Park for me. Their guide, Patricio, is a first class naturalist with all the skills required to impart his vast knowledge of the area to a visitor like me. His forensic searching out of those tiny birds in the deep forest ensured I was introduced to an impressive list of birds as well as given a great deal of background information about them. By far the best birding trip I have been on.

We did a half-day tour with Sandpiper Birding on the Macuco Trail inside Iguazo Falls National Park and it couldn’t have been better! It was SO nice to be there early in the morning before the park opens to the public!! Even after the park opened, not many people hike on this trail, so it still was a super quiet experience compared with the trails going to the waterfalls. Our guide was amazing – he heard the tiniest, quietest bird calls, ID’d them by call, and then was usually able to locate them for us to look at, too. We saw and heard over 80 species in 6-1/2 hours. He was a really fun, professional, and talented guide!

Excellent weekend of birding with a very experienced & knowledgeable guide!
We did a day of birding with Diego Oscar, principle guide and founder of Sandpiper Birding Tours in Buenos Aires and he set up this three day tour over the weekend in Iguazu with Dr.Patricio Ramirez Llorens, a local ornithologist, researcher, conservationist at the Iguazu National Park. We were lucky to have Patricio as our host and guide for the whole period.
Patricio is tireless with his enthusiasm and deep knowledge of not just birds, but the mammals, the plants, the insects and the local indigenous culture. We learned a lot from Patricio during this trip when he used to be with us for over 12 hours every day, starting at 6AM in the morning and returning back to our hotel late evening or night.
We saw nearly a hundred species with 18 of them being lifers for us. It is a very good statistics as we have already birded in Argentina, Brazil & Peru before this trip, countries that share many of the species.
We flew in from Sao Paulo and landed in the IGU airport on the Brazilian side and Patricio picked us from the airport and we drove across the border to Puerto Iguazu on the Argentinian side, which was our base during the trip. Clearing the Brazilian immigration both ways was very short without any waiting. On the Argentinian side, it took 30 minutes each way, which wasn’t bad.
We did some birding along the paths leading to the Iguazu falls, which are really impressive with excellent infrastructure, having been to Niagara and Victoria Falls before. Highly recommend the visit to the falls.
Patricio had already studied our target lists and prepared the list of spots to visit based on that. It was very well planned!
I would highly recommend engaging Sandpiper Tours, Diego and Patricio.

The trip was perfectly organized, accommodation and food were great, and the number of birds was incredible (way over 300 species, including 150 lifers in a couple of weeks). Diego was very easy to get along with, he really knows the birds very well, and the experience as a whole was very pleasant.
