On the coast of the Rio de la Plata is located one of the most important cities in South America and a fundamental port for cruise ships that visit the area. Montevideo has great birdlife and many species to see! We suggest you enjoy a full day visiting the best sites in the area.
In the west of Montevideo there is a natural reserve integrated into the National System of Protected Areas called Wetlands of Santa Lucía. It covers a relatively large extension of coasts, estuaries, rural and suburban areas, native and exotic forests, we will also visit on this tour an Important Bird Area called Playa Penino that covers 8 kilometers of beaches and swamps along the shores of the Río de the Silver. This area is very important for migratory birds, species that come from North or South America.

Las salidas que organiza Diego son excelentes, buen clima grupal, gran conocimiento de las aves, puntualidad y capacidad para resolver cualquier cuestión que se presente. Recomendable 100 %.

As a solo female traveller, I look for a bird guide who I can feel safe traveling with first and foremost. I found Diego and Gonzalo on time as promised meeting me for a day of birding while I was in port. Their vehicles were well kept. They came equipped with binoculars and scopes. Of course going on an independent excursion from the cruise ship is risky because you need to be back in time before the all aboard time. The company picked a location(s) that was close to the ship and was a real gem of a birding site. I returned to the ship in plenty of time.
The price was standard for individual bird guiding cost.
I found the guides not only knowledgeable, but also patient as we waiting or the time it took for me to find the bird.
Everyone has a different idea of what birdwatching means to them. Having a discussion beforehand of your expectations goes a long way to having a successful day. My preference is to photograph as many birds as possible. While I am busy doing that, the guides kept the ebird list which they shared with me afterwards. Since it was my first time specifically birding in Uruguay and Argentina, my wishlist was to see and photo as many “lifers” as possible. The days were successful.
Having a cooler with cold water is a nice add on in the car as carrying a water bottle is cumbersome.
Thanks for 2 wonderful days! Regards.
